and a standoff leads a school on lock down. the suspect was carrying guns in each hand. good evening. it's monday, february 27. this is bay area news at 7:00. a four alarm fire ripped through an apartment complex late this afternoon destroying at least nine units and forcing the evacuation of dozens of residents. we are live at the apartments on east dana street near highway 237 to tell us what's happening now. >> reporter: that's right. i'm near the apartments on west dana street. you can see the firefighters are still here. the fire chief tells me they have contained this apartment fire. here's the view from news

chopper 2 after the fire broke out around 3:30 this afternoon. this is a 149 unit complex two story building. we're told the fire started in apartment 57 in the c building. we were able to get cell phone video. fire departments from five fire fire departments responded. a number of residents said they fled when they realized a fire was burning. flames were as high as 15 feet. >> went to look out the back window. people in the condos behind us were looking at us telling us to get out, screaming and pointing to the roof of the house that it was on fire. >> the wind was blowing here pushed the fire pretty aggressively down. what happened, we were able to get our teams in place, our towers you see here. those combined with the fire

stops were able to contain it. >> reporter: there are as many as 25 that can't get back to their homes now. an evacuation center has been set up at a nearby elementary school. they're trying to decide the or jib of the fire and what started the flame. four are gutted and others are destroyed due to water velops, come back to you and have it for you. live in mountain view, ktvu. >> in san francisco, firefighters are cleaning up after a two alarm house fire in the glenn park neighborhood. it started around 4:45 this afternoon near congo street. flames briefly spread to a neighboring home before it was put out. no one was injured. a shooting in east oakland forced a lock down at a middle school. police told us they've

recovered two guns from this morning's shooting on 17th avenue. officers were responding to a burglary around 10:30 this morning when a man with a gun in each hand fired at police. police shot back. no one was hit. the suspect went into hiding. a lock down went in effect at the middle school. >> i wanted to pick my son up and bring him home. >> the suspect was arrested three hours later after he was spotted by a helicopter. police brought in an armor car, snipers and a swat team to bring him to arrest. the domestic violence trial evidence will be allowed in court. the video tape showing his wife with the bruise on her arm is admissible. we're showing you still images now from the video tape. it was taken one day after he allegedly grabbed her arm leaving the bruise. this is a huge win for the

prosecution. now a jury is going to watch the statements in that video tape and decide whether or not he's guilty. >> it should be thrown out. it's here say and unreliable. >> the judge decided to speak to a former girlfriend before decide if she will be allowed to testify. the next step in the trial is jury selection which could get underway tuesday. details of a fraud scam involving city workers is underway. the da says an employee of the cole hardware conspired with six city workers submitting phony invoices to the city and bought items for their personal use. the owner of the hardware store agreed to pay more than $50,000 from restitution and barred if doing business with the city. the cole hardware employee and the city workers face criminal

charges. many from the yacht race are dropping plans. the mayor announced piers 31 and 32 will no longer be renovated to house the teams sailing in the race. the city was supposed to give up development rights though the piers. now racing teams will be stationenned at pier 80 farther south. it won't affect the race's schedule or course. one late approval late this afternoon to build a production facility to expand the movie empire for lucas is underway. we are live where the plan came under fire today before ultimately winning approval. >> reporter: well today the planning commission gave the green light to the ranch project. this is a summary of that project. there is significant support from a lot of people in that particular area. a lot of neighbors turned out at today's meeting and voiced

opposition to the project. they're worried about traffic and noise. some who live in the rolling hills of the lucas valley worry this will ruin the area. >> we moved here for the open space and being able to see the stars and not hearing trucks on the road day and night. >> this is lucas valley not lucas' valuely. >> reporter: a number of neighbors spoke out against lucas' plan to build a tv and film production facility. >> it's going to impact a whole region, area. we don't have the infrastructure to support it. >> reporter: there would be more than 300 employees on site. a respective down played the concerns today about noise and traffic. >> we don't believe those are significant issues. those are mitigated through

what the county requires. >> reporter: some expressed support today for the film i production facility. many people point to lucas' track record of preserving open land when they built big rock nearby. >> it's because of his incredible desire as island steward and financial ability that my son and his future generations will be able to continue to enjoy this. >> reporter: opponents have two weeks to appeal today's decision. lucas film in the meantime has to go through a long permit prosearch. they expect to break ground -- permit process. they expect to break ground next year. more trouble for a popular lounge in downtown walnut creek. 6-grams of cocaine was found packaged for sale.

the street value is estimated at $500. earlier this month, the city council voted to move up the lounge curfew citing a high number of police calls. this incident happened at the fraternity house late saturday night. investigators say freshman andrew crowley dried to climb down the outside of the house on a drainpipe. the pipe pull ed from the wall. he fell to the ground two stories below. police are calling it an accident. fraternity leaders say he's not a member of the fraternity but has friends in the house. special crews recovered the body of a hiker who fell to his death while rock climbing. the man fell yesterday while hiking with a friend east of gill roy. the friend was injured and taken to the hospital. search and rescue crews used

ropes and harnesses to recover the hiker's body. >> a lot of rocks and large boulders. it's common and known to climbers. >> authorities have not released the hiker's name. the death now appears to be accidental. at the state capitol today, occupied protestors clashed with police. officers say the protestors attacked them as they escorted a pro white group. officers were trying to keep the groups separate when dozens of protestors started throwing cans and bottles. two officers suffered minor injuries. three protestors were arrested. one step closer to a deal to keep them if the state cap top, kings, nba and officials announced the plan to finance a

new arena in the area. they will give sacramento one more chance. they're set to vote on a new deal next week. a new twist in the search for hue plan remains in the central valley. a new letter from a death row inmate was addressed to a bounty hunt per. in it, he asked if dna tests have identified remains of those as 16-year-old hobson who went missing in 1985. a map drawn up led investigators to a dig site where more than a thousand bones were found. the inmate tells him there are more. >> the fbi will bring him out of the prison and have him point to the ground of all the new areas. he is suspected of killing more than 20 people. an emergency landing forced the shut down of a busy east

coast airport today. a united express flight landed new liberty airport around 6:20 eastern time after the pilot reported the landing gear problem. no one was hurt. officials shut down the run ways about an hour after the landing. meantime, a crews ship is adrift without power in pirate infested water. the predicament for passengers ahead in five minutes. a quake struck with a magnitude of 5.9, two miles northeast of danville. it is a long time neighborhood eyesore that has neighbors worried about their own health and safety. we'll tell you what could lead to a cleanup. romney is on home turf. how the political landscape is changing ahead of tomorrow's

investigators are blaming a faulty extension cord for a fire this morning. we were there as smoke billowed out of the windows. a woman living in the apartment was treated for smoke inhalation. the red cross is helping her find temporary housing. hundreds survivorred two weeks without being fed or going up for adoption. the chickens were among 50,000 found dead or starving at a shut down egg farm in the central valley last weekend. about a third of the hens died. several thousands were saved.

the humane society will offer 400 of them for adoption. the man renting out the farm reportedly stopped feeding them because of the high cost to feed. he faces high cruelty charges. trash piled up so high in the home of this house, it's piled up to the roof. the home may be cleaned up finally after years of complaints. >> reporter: neighbors call the house many names from the eye association hazard house. the property on clermont avenue is filled with mechanical parts, animal cages, garbage bags, other items piled to the roof. >> there's so much debris back there. >> reporter: the original owners died in the 1980s. neighborsas y the son is a junk horder that disappears for various stretches. we're told because of budget problems the city -- >> can't do nothing. that's not right.

trouble in the indian ocean. it's adrift off the island nation, an area where pirates have attacked a number of ships. about a thousand are on board. authorities say the fire is out and no one is hurt. rescue vessels have been sent to tow the ship ashore. a teenage boy is accused of a shooting inside his high school cafeteria. the gunman shot at a group sitting at a table before being chased out of the building by a teacher. one student died at the sea. four others are at the hospital, two in critical condition. authorities have not named the suspect. some students say he was a victim of bullying. a memorial outside a long beach elementary school where a 10 years old died after getting in a fight with another student. the los angeles coroner said the girl died from blunt force trauma to the head. her death is treated as a
